What I'd do Differently

The voltmeter I have made/modified is, by definition, a prototype. It is naturally the case that, while I was making it, I though of other ways to go about it, normally after it was too late. This page sets out ways I think the project could be improved.

  1. Opening the case The 'mounting' page describes how I dismantled the meter case by levering back the edges of the bezel and reassembled it by tapping it back into place with a piece of wood. This was quite successful but quite clearly cannot be repeated more than a few times without distorting the bezel. In hindsight, it would be a good idea to cut the case all the way round, a few millimeters above the case. A ring could then be fabricated to fit inside the join, screwed to both halves with countersunk machine screws. This would enable the case to be opened if modifications or repairs are needed.
  2. Illumination The original bulb was retained to provide illumination to the meter at night. This lights up the face nicely, but, unfortunately, it does not provide sufficient light to illuminate the Liquid Crystal Display effectively. I have in mind a meter face made of transparent clear plastic painted on the face side but forming a sort of light tunnel reflecting the light onto the LCD. I will update this page with results as and when I can.
